4 Steps for Successful School Improvement in the 21st Century

4 Steps for Successful School Improvement in the 21st Century

Successful schools continue to identify the need of the hour and change accordingly to fit in the race of success stories.

Technology has altered the way learning and teaching takes place and this pace of change is accelerating. In order to lead in the 21st century we need to be prepared to adapt this change and move accordingly.

4 steps that you’d like to consider for your school improvement are mentioned below. Take a look!

1) School Infrastructure for Digital Age

To improve your school and be ready for providing education in 21st century you will have to be ready in all manner; and infrastructure is one of the most important factors that reflect the qualitative aspects of the school.

School infrastructure needs to be changed and be according to the needs of the students, teachers & the organization that is going to work in the tech age. A technically equipped campus where teachers, students and the staff have access to all the technology they will need to perform their activities. Accessibility to internet is the most important thing that will have to be taken care of. The classrooms must be ready to provide all the tech resources that will be needed by teachers and students. First make sure whether you want to follow BYOD, 1:1 or Blended Learning approach, and accordingly create an environment that supports the chosen technique. Preparing for the digital age means to pace up with the ever-changing environment that you will witness. So be prepared for the digital age, keep the resources available with the space for changes that will come your way.

2) Curriculum & Assessment for the 21st Century

The skills we will need in the future will be, or at least look, different from those we've needed in the past. - John Morgan, Senior Researcher at Futurelab.

Leave the past and don’t let it interfere your future. Pull up your socks to work for a new curriculum that will not only enhance students like never before but also provide them with the liberty to work in their areas of interest. New ways of teaching and learning calls for new curriculum. The modernized education system will not be restricted to the same subjects being taught to the whole class. The tech era will provide students to indulge in the subjects of their interest and will help them to enhance their creativity and let it flow uninterrupted. The assessment will not be a way to arrange students grade wise instead the balanced assessment will be a way to understand the potential of the students and guide them in the right direction by providing them feedback, resources and will open new opportunities for the students. The curriculum of digital age must enable students for innovative learning methods along with tech integration that will enhance the thinking skills of students.

3) Better Communication in and outside the Classroom

Communication plays an important role for an educational leader. In this epoch of social media, our networks are bigger than ever as we have many ways to stay connected. The sphere of communication has expanded significantly. How and with whom we communicate has changed drastically. Seamless connectivity not only in class but also outside the class will help teachers and students understand each other’s tasks better. When the communication will be uninterrupted, students can perform better as they will be able to get in touch with their teacher when they will need to. The 21st century educator must be a communicator, fluent in tools and technologies that enable communication and collaboration. They must also know how to facilitate communication, stimulate and control it, moderate and manage it. New technologies, apps, devices and other leading tools will help to create an uninterrupted pace for communication in and outside the classroom.

4) Professional Development of Leaders and Teachers

Changes are difficult but are refreshing and important. The ability of teachers and leaders to use variety of technologies and to adapt to the ever-changing educational environment will reflect in your success stats. To make your teachers competent, make sure opportunities and resources for professional development are provided. Training workshops and exposure to teachers will help them to play their role efficiently in digital age. A teacher with an understanding of 21st century pedagogies, who recognizes that these technologies are enablers and motivators for our 21st century learners, is able to use the learner’s own skills and abilities (as well as their own skills and insight) to enhance technology integration and student learning is what you will need to top up the race in the 21st century. Provide the teachers & leaders with enough professional development, keep them happy and happy teachers will raise up your success charts.
