Why Schools Must Give Importance to Experiential Learning for Students

Experiential learning is the process of learning through experiences and is more specifically defined as "learning through reflection on doing".

Any learning that supports students in applying their knowledge and conceptual understanding to real-world problems or situations where the instructor directs and facilitates learning helping students learn from real life experience is experiential learning. The classroom, laboratory, or studio can serve as a setting for experiential learning through embedded activities such as case and problem-based studies, guided inquiry, simulations, experiments, or art projects. When students are given opportunities to learn in authentic situations on campus or in the community like those provided in internships, field placements, clinical experiences, research and service-learning projects, the learning becomes significantly more powerful.

By engaging in formal, guided, authentic, real-world experiences, individuals:

- Deepen their knowledge through repeatedly acting and then reflecting on the action.

- Develop skills through practice and reflection.

- Support the construction of new understandings when placed in novel situations.

- Extend their learning as they bring their learning back to the classroom.

When we talk of experiential learning, introduction to robotics plays a major role.

Robotics is increasingly being considered the fourth ‘R’ of learning - ”Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic” being the other three- that modern day students must understand to succeed in a highly competitive, technology driven world. Robotics has been playing an important role in modern education. Over the past few years, it has become increasingly evident that robotic systems significantly enhance the learning outcomes. Robotics initiates an excellent imagination even in kids who are not very interested in science or technology.

Robotics when introduced in education and early in schools can create such a learning environment in which the children can be motivated to ask questions, create a design and think out loud for themselves. It can prove to be a unique learning tool that can attract students and hold their interest and motivation through interesting hands-on learning experiences, where the children actually make robots and after the first build season get hooked on for life.

In a recent interview, Mohan Krishna Naraharisetty who is the COO at JayRobotix shared his insights on why and how schools are giving importance to experiential learning and how their flagship product ROBOX has introduced a 'wow' factor in education and makes the process of learning truly electrifying.

ROBOX is a holistic self-paced experiential learning package which helps the students to work on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) concepts through practical, hands on and experiential approach has great kits and programs for the kids. It prepares them to build a future that doesn't yet exist.

“We build products which can be used to establish STEM-based Labs at schools, which deploy & run various robotics based educational programs. The vision of the program is to establish a fun, joyful & vibrant atmosphere in the classes and bring out the innovative skills in the young students. ROBOX is well supported by a detailed yearlong curriculum from 3rd Grade to 10th Grade, lesson plans, video tutorials and a 3D video game like simulation software called RoboGuru,” he adds.

All their efforts are in line with the motive to promote practical way of learning classroom subjects through robotics. It suggests practical way to learn math and physics concepts and brings that extra spark to experience science concepts. It offers complete hands on approach fostering spirit of team work which is a key to success in today's globalized world.

Thanks to the ROBOX team, we got the chance to get some word right from their clients.

“Jay Robotix " ROBOX" gives an excellent learning experience to children as it ignites the young minds into a creativity. Children will love this “play as you learn and learn as you play" STEM education methodology developed by Jay Robotix. I would strongly recommend this product to every parent of a child as they can participate in the learning phase of their children. There can be no better way to assist a teacher in teaching STEM and so every school should go for it.”

– B.V.S.Prakash, Nhance India Solutions.

"Robotics can show a new direction for the next generation with SMART education methodologies and pedagogues. ROBOX has shown how powerful the process could be in our School Summer Camp 2016 which had a participation students from different schools apart from our own school kids. The initiative of ROBOX STEM EDUCATION CENTER at BIA was aligned with priorities and vision of Bangalore International Academy to emerge as a knowledge hub in Robotics studies and produce globally relevant expert programmers and STEM skilled students. This will encourage innovation and creative thinking among students across Bangalore who will come and learn at our BIA's ROBOX STEM EDUCATION CENTER."

- Mr. D Muniraju, Chairman, Bangalore International Group of Institution (BIGI)

In conclusion, robotics is not just a tool for practical learning it also helps in personality development of a child to enabling him/her to create more value at work and evolve as a thinking citizen.
