What is Learning Analytics (LA)?

Learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimizing learning and the environments in which it occurs.

It is the field associated with

deciphering trends and patterns from educational big data, or huge sets of student-related data, to further the advancement of a personalized , supportive system of higher education. Learning Analytics focuses on applying tools and techniques at larger scales in instrucional systems.

Learning analytics enables a new level of data-driven decision making for the purpose of supporting students. Learning analytics is a collective institutional effort in every way: identifying, collecting, and organizing data; developing analytic models; collaborating with people with diverse skill sets; and determining actionable steps to use the information gathered.

LA answers questions like:

  • When are the students ready to move on to the next topic?
  • When a student is at risk for not completing a course?
  • What grade is the student likely to receive without intervention?
  • Should the studet be refered to a counselor for help?
