Uwill, a Boston-based mental health platform for colleges and students, has recently made a global stride by acquiring Virtual Care Group, a fellow student-focused telehealth and wellness support platform. This strategic move will extend Uwill’s reach to 400 colleges worldwide, marking a significant shift in the global mental health landscape.
Founded in 2020, Uwill aims to offer immediate mental health and wellness support to eliminate all barriers to care. The platform has partnered with colleges to provide students with on-demand virtual access to licensed therapists and providers trained in crisis counselling. Students can attend online wellness events through the company’s mental wellness and health app. The firm works with 300 institutions in 50 states and 40 countries.
Speaking on the deal, Founder & CEO of Virtual Care Group, Danny Zusman, said:
This acquisition is not just a business deal, but a testament to our unwavering commitment to the mental health and wellbeing of the higher education community. Through the integration of our extensive nationwide reach with Uwill’s focused technological investments, we aim to enhance the support and resources available to the students, faculty, and staff we are dedicated to serving.
Headquartered in Los Angeles, Virtual Care Group offers a matching platform that pairs providers with students, college faculty, and staff who need support for their wellbeing and mental and physical health. The platform is currently implemented at more than 100 colleges.
Last year, Uwill secured $30 million in Series A funding, which the company said it would use to accelerate its growth and expand its platform. The startup garnered a $3.25 million investment in 2020 led by rapper Darryl McDaniels of Run-DMC, and a year later, it completed its angel funding round of $5.2 million. In June, it partnered with digital mental health company Headspace to expand its on-demand therapy offerings, Urise, to include the direct-to-consumer platform.
