It is important that to make a successful career in today’s world, apart from education, one needs to know what type of career is going to suit their personality. It is difficult to break down various facets of personality into different traits.
And even if one can be clearly and consciously aware of their characteristics, how does he/she know which jobs/career they’re suited to? I mean, it is not possible to know which career is appropriate for which personality type if one only have knowledge of very few careers?
Thus, Psychometric Career tests have become a necessary tool these days. These Psychometric Career tests are a quick, convenient way of grouping individuals in “personality type” — giving an idea of which targeted personality type you fall into in terms of abilities, skills, life’s ambitions and future aspirations. Once you know which personality group and type you fall into, it becomes easy to assess what type of career might be suited to you.
With this in mind, I tasked myself to try out a few free online psychometric tests specifically targeted towards career choosing. Here is my comparison study. I am evaluating 7 tests from different providers on the following criteria Time, Cost, Type, Pattern, Credibility, Gamifacition, Validity, Theory, Audience, Language, User friendliness, Report, User Guide (Add ons), Reports and its usability and last but not the least Follow Up Process.
After taking all these test I realized that these tests are target to the student base when they have a lot in their hand and the purpose of these tests are to make life easier for them at this juncture not add on to their woes.
And most important facet of these tests are:
- Gamification: Test can be really boring thing to undergo for a student, specially the long ones and gamification of the test does help reduces drop outs from even the most disinterested student.
- Credibility: Credibility is on the basis of their acceptance in the career counselling community, years of existence and the theory behind the test.
- Validity: Catering to the Indian audience is very important as prospects vary vastly from the western world.
- Reports and their understandability: This is the most important factor as all these test boils down to the test result aka. report they provide and how it is being perceived. Can it be easily understood by the student themselves or are they like sophisticated medical diagnostics tests only qualified doctors can understand make a hell lot of difference, keeping in mind the audience may not be technically very qualified. Do the test provide recommendations and specific careers and also go on to show specific careers and job roles?
