Duolingo, widely recognized as the most popular language learning platform, has introduced a new feature for English learners from Tamil Nadu. The ‘Learn English From Tamil’ feature was developed to address the demands of Tamil speakers who want to improve their English skills.
The new offering will be the platform’s fourth Indic course, which will follow Bengali, Hindi, and Telugu. Duolingo’s classes in regional languages are breaking down barriers to language learning and making it accessible to everyone. Like other courses on the platform, this one provides a gamified, engaging, and culturally relevant learning experience. According to the company, this allows Tamil speakers to learn English at their own pace and for free.
Speaking about the latest feature, Karandeep Singh Kapany, Regional Marketing Director of Duolingo India, said:
Localisation lies at the heart of our mission to make language learning accessible and relevant for everyone. With the ‘Learn English from Tamil’ course, we’re excited to offer Tamil speakers an opportunity to learn English in a culturally resonant and engaging way.
Kapany added:
Tamil is the cornerstone of India’s cultural and linguistic diversity. With its latest course, Duolingo has reaffirmed its commitment to enabling Tamil speakers to learn English easily. “India’s linguistic diversity inspires us to create courses that reflect the unique needs of our users, and this launch is another step in our journey to empower learners across the country.
Duolingo collaborated with the creative agency Talented to create a campaign rooted in Tamil Nadu culture to celebrate the official launch. The campaign, called “English Vaathi Duo,” combines the cinematic grandeur of Tamil pop culture with Duo’s lively and quirky attitude. The mascot adopts a new name, “English Vaathi,” to reflect his position as a teacher while effortlessly merging into Tamil Nadu’s cultural fabric.
The social-first campaign comes alive with striking visuals inspired by Tamil cinema, complete with kuthu beats, dance sequences, and larger-than-life theatrics. Designed to spark excitement and engagement, the campaign highlights Duolingo’s ability to connect with users through cultural storytelling.
Abhishek Kumar and Nikhil Unni, Brand Strategy and Creative at Talented, added:
Social media has given us a platform to connect with Tamil Nadu’s deep love for cinematic flair and storytelling. With ‘English Vaathi Duo,’ we aimed to create a campaign that not only celebrates the state’s rich cultural heritage but also brings Duo’s quirky personality to life in a way that resonates with Tamil audiences. From kuthu beats to cinematic dance sequences, every element was designed to spark excitement and engagement on social platforms.
Duolingo’s ‘Learn English from Tamil’ course reinforces the platform’s mission to make language learning accessible, enjoyable, and effective. By addressing the unique needs of Tamil Nadu’s learners, Duolingo continues to empower individuals with tools to achieve personal and professional growth while bridging language gaps.
Duolingo strives to offer the best education in the world and make it available to everyone. It is the most downloaded education app, and in 2019, it became the world’s highest-grossing platform. The company aims to accomplish something completely different in the learning area. To keep students interested, it offers bite-sized lessons that feel like games. Learning a new language may sometimes be expensive, so the company made it free.
