In an effort to strengthen India’s healthcare landscape, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has announced a slew of new courses, with a focus on epidemiology, epidemic intelligence, and health education and communication. These initiatives represent a deliberate effort to skill healthcare workers and provide experts with the latest medical equipment and technology knowledge.
The newly launched courses are under the purview of ICMR and address a wide range of significant topics, catering to the healthcare sector’s evolving needs. These programmes, which range from frontline epidemiologists to communication specialists, aim to enhance the skills and abilities of healthcare professionals across multiple disciplines. The flagship Online Health Communications Course provides participants a comprehensive understanding of strategic communication, health communication, media management, and community engagement. This initiative underscores the importance of effective communication in disseminating vital health information and fostering community participation in healthcare initiatives.
Furthermore, the ICMR has proactively addressed the growing need for skilled epidemiologists and epidemic intelligence specialists. Establishing the ICMR School of Public Health (ICMR-SPH) is an important milestone in this undertaking. The ICMR aims to cultivate a cadre of adept epidemiologists capable of addressing emerging health threats through advanced programmes such as the Master of Public Health and Epidemic Intelligence Services Programme, as well as intermediate training such as the Field Epidemiology Training Programme for Noncommunicable Diseases (FETP-NCD).
In addition, the Council has used its knowledge to build and create specialized courses on medical equipment and technology. These include diplomas in paramedical fields such as anaesthesia technician, blood transfusion technician, dialysis technician, cath lab technician, medical lab technician, optometry and refraction technician, perfusion technology, and x-ray and radiographer technician.
Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director-General of the ICMR, expressed hope about the impact of these initiatives, stating:
The launch of these courses represents a significant step forward in our efforts to strengthen India’s healthcare infrastructure. By investing in the skilling of healthcare professionals and fostering innovation in medical education, we aim to enhance the quality of healthcare delivery and address the evolving healthcare challenges facing our nation. With these new courses, ICMR reaffirms its commitment to advancing healthcare education and training, fostering a workforce equipped to address the dynamic healthcare landscape of the 21st century.
To democratize access to healthcare education and training, ICMR has collaborated with the National Programme on Technology Enhanced Learning (NPTEL) platform to launch a series of pioneering courses to bolster India’s healthcare workforce. The Council has made significant strides in disseminating knowledge and fostering skill development in crucial healthcare domains through the platform. Among the standout offerings is the Online Certificate Course on ‘One Health’, a first-of-its-kind initiative in India. This course, designed and developed by ICMR, delves into the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health, providing participants with a holistic understanding of health ecosystems.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi, the apex body in India for the formulation, coordination and promotion of biomedical research, is one of the oldest medical research bodies in the world. The organization has always attempted to address itself to the growing demands of scientific advances in biomedical research on the one hand and the need to find practical solutions to the country’s health problems on the other. The Government of India supports the ICMR through the Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The Council’s research priorities coincide with the National health priorities, such as control and management of infectious diseases, fertility control, maternal and child health, control of nutritional disorders, developing alternative strategies for health care delivery, containment within safety limits of environmental and occupational health problems, etc. All these efforts are undertaken to reduce the total disease burden and promote the population’s health and well-being.
