Muzigal, an online global academy for music education, has raised an undisclosed amount of funding from Kalaari Capital, a venture capital fund investing in early-stage and tech-oriented companies.
The company had raised the new funding in February 2021 but disclosed it only recently when it announced its success with the funding. The funds have been deployed to advance the platform, boost hiring requirements, and launch its sales and marketing efforts.
Muzigal was launched in July 2020 by Dr. Lakshminarayana Yeluri to connect students, instructors, professional musicians, and music enthusiasts for online live music lessons. It launched its operations in August 2020 in the US to help non-resident Indians to learn music virtually with authentic and native language-speaking teachers from India. The company is now one of the fastest-growing online music learning platforms with more than 10,000 learners from ten different countries and growing at 20% month-on-month in revenue and new learners.
The company has onboarded more than 400 teachers and conducted over 40,000 classes in subjects ranging from Indian classical to western music in over 20 specializations in vocal and musical instruments categories. The students can learn vocal classes like Carnatic and Western music and musical instruments like guitar, piano, sitar, keyboard, and violin, among others. Muzigal claims around 1 lakh students have been counseled and over 25,000 students have taken free trial classes to experience its platform.
Speaking about the company, Dr. Lakshminarayana Yeluri, Founder of Muzigal, said,
“The total offline music learning market is around USD 500 million in India, and Muzigal is establishing leadership in the online segment of this market. We always knew that there is an immense potential in online music learning, which was largely unorganized. We realized that Muzigal had the right approach in keeping people engaged in pursuing their passion for music virtually and the timing was just right. We are happy that our innovation in one year has not only helped thousands of people learn music but also empowered hundreds of music teachers to scale their music classes globally through our platform.”
Muzigal’s mission is to help music learners worldwide select and join music classes with the best teachers in an easy three-click way. Its platform makes the entire online learning seamless and smooth right from booking, scheduling, live video, and communication between the student and teacher. In less than one year, the startup has witnessed high demand for classes, strong student retention, applications from talented teachers, and new student interest daily.
Vamshi Reddy, Partner at Kalaari Capital, said,
“We are pleased to welcome Muzigal to the Kalaari family. Although extra-curricular education is a large market, not all segments are equally likely to go online. Certain segments like music are still nascent but growing fast. We are privileged to partner with Dr. Lakshminarayana Yeluri and look forward to seeing Muzigal become the leading online learning platform in the segment of music education.”
Muzigal aims to make high-quality music education accessible and affordable for a million learners across the world by empowering 20,000+ music teachers in the next four years and launching its marketplace in the US by September 2021 for American citizens too.
