O.P. Jindal Global University (JGU) has partnered with Gurugram-based startup Sukoon Health to launch a mental health centre within the university premises. This pioneering step marks a significant advancement in addressing the mental health challenges faced by college students.
The initiative responds to the growing mental health crisis in educational institutions, with students facing heightened risks of anxiety, depression, and other mental health problems due to academic pressures, competitive exam stress, societal expectations, and a lack of mental health education and resources. The stigma surrounding mental health often inhibits open discussions and help-seeking, worsening the situation.
Speaking about the collaboration, Prof. (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, O.P. Jindal Global University, said:
With this partnership, JGU aims to ensure easy access to mental health care services, foster a community that prioritizes health and promotes emotional prosperity.
According to a JGU survey, 52% of students believe they do not have access to the resources they need, even though 90% of students have identified concerns. The Sukoon Center seeks to provide much-needed support because 90% of students feel that their peers are experiencing more mental health problems than in the past. The survey also found that 30 per cent of students have sought professional help, 66 per cent are aware of peers struggling with substance abuse, and 81 per cent report that they or their peers grapple with mental health concerns. These findings underscore the urgent need for mental health support among students.
Sukoon’s services at JGU include professional support from qualified counsellors, therapists, and mental health professionals. They will also provide family therapy services. All interactions with Sukoon Health’s staff will be confidential, ensuring a safe student environment. The initiative will also include a screening service for early intervention and workshops to promote mental health awareness, build resilience, and foster a supportive community on campus.
Dr Satish Ramaiah, Executive Director of Psychiatry Services at Sukoon Health, stated:
Sukoon Health is proud to partner with JGU to provide comprehensive mental health services on campus. Our services include assessment, counselling, therapy, preventative strategies, awareness sessions, and more. We aim to empower JGU students to manage mental health issues and reach their full potential.
