College Vidya, a renowned online platform, recently conducted a study that revealed that half of all prospective students are concerned about potential fraudulent activities in online education. A new study of 90,000 students uncovered considerable worries about fraud in online education.
According to the comprehensive survey, five out of every ten students who inquire about online courses are concerned about fraud. These concerns centre on payment security, degree validity, and the authenticity of job placement claims.
Here are the insights from the survey
Check for UGC Approval before considering any Online Programme
The Study highlights that 50% of students seek UGC approval before choosing any online programme, and 30% hesitate to make payments without sufficient verification. Furthermore, 20% of students doubt the reliability of online education providers’ placement and employment achievement claims.
These findings align with recent warnings from the University Grants Commission (UGC) regarding fraudulent online programmes. According to UGC’s official guidelines, several disciplines, including Engineering, Medical Sciences, Law, Architecture, and Pharmacy, are prohibited from being offered online or in Open and Distance Learning (ODL) modes. This restriction has been implemented to maintain educational standards and protect student interests.
Careful Decision-Making Among Students
The survey also demonstrates a growing trend of thoughtful choices by students in online education. About 80 percent of students now take the time to verify institutional recognition on the Distance Education Bureau (DEB) website and ensure that their chosen programme is allowed under UGC guidelines. There is also an increasing emphasis on understanding fee structures and verifying placement records before making any commitments. The most significant move in this regard is the new requirement that students enrolling in authorized ODL and online programmes create a UGC-DEB ID. This legislation intends to provide additional protection and authentication for students seeking online education.
This research reveals students’ rising awareness of the need to select legitimate online education options while emphasizing the need for stricter measures to combat fraudulent behaviours in the field.
Commenting on these survey findings, Rohit Gupta, COO of College Vidya, said:
Students take several precautionary steps before enrolling in online programmes. These include thoroughly verifying institutional recognition through official channels, carefully evaluating placement claims, and maintaining vigilance against misleading advertisements. The Study emphasizes the importance of transparent fee structures and proper accreditation in building trust in online education.
