Imagine if you could step into the internet world and live it. That’s Metaverse in action.
Facebook announced its rebranding to Meta and would focus on the upcoming Metaverse. Alongside, we saw CEOs like Satya Nadella talk about the Metaverse being the future of the internet. At Microsoft’s Ignite 2021 conference in November, Nadella compared the promise of the Metaverse to how “the tech world” looked with the evolving internet in the 1990s.
“When we talk about the Metaverse, we’re describing both a new platform and a new application type. This is similar to how we talked about the “web” and “websites” in the early ’90s. It’s no longer just playing a game with friends. You can be in the game with them,” Nadella said.
While all tech giants have started to build a “new tech future” called “Metaverse”, the air on the term Metaverse has yet to get any clearer. This post will shed some light on the term, its associated aspects, and its role in education.
What is Metaverse?
The Metaverse is an integrated network of 3D virtual worlds with space for social connections. You can access these virtual worlds through a virtual reality headset and navigate them using eye movements, voice commands, or feedback controllers. The headset immerses the user while stimulating what they know in the present, creating a physical sensation of being there in the virtual world (the Metaverse).
Based on this video: Tech companies are investing billions of dollars into the Metaverse, a new tech dimension that can be defined as a virtual world where people live, work and play. Users get to create their virtual world in Metaverse and connect with others virtually, just as real.
The video discusses some early versions of the Metaverse that still need refinement. Many of those early versions were touted by the tech giants at this year’s Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona.
However, there’s still a long way to go, and questions are already being asked about what Metaverse offers and how it will change the internet and technology.
